Ping Times Outs

I have 2 machines on a network connected by a Linksys Router. Both run
XP SP2.
From Computer A, I can ping Computer B fine.

But from Computer B, when I ping Computer A, I always get "Request
Timed Out." If I try to ping Computer A using its' name, it returns
the correct IP Address for that name, but still gives the Request Timed
Out error.

I can ping Computer A from Computer A using either the IP address or
the computer name.

I have tried uninstalling Zone Alarm on both machines, but there is no
difference. Windows firewall is not running.


This started about 3 weeks ago. To my knowledge, no software was
installed. The other error that started was with sharing resources.

Also, when I had just TCP/IP as a network protocol, I started getting
the error message "\\ComputerA\MyData is not accessible. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions".

I have Simple File Sharing turned on

Temporarily, I have installed NetBIOS so that I could share resources.


What else should I look at to resolve the ping and sharing issue?

Alan,

What network protocols do you have now in addition to TCP/IP? Installing extra
protocols is not always the best way to start dealing with file sharing issues.
TCP/IP, and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, should be enough in a properly setup LAN.

The "... not accessible. You might not have permission..." error can come from
numerous problems.

Solve the lower level problems first - work on the ping issue. If it's not a
firewall problem (and keep an open mind please, because Zone Alarm is one of
several personal firewalls that are known here for causing problems if not
removed absolutely completely), you might have an LSP / Winsock problem.
