ping not working

Ok in my command prompt when I try and "ping" or use "tracert" they didn't
work. It said they wheren't valid system32 apps. I had to go into
C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete two prgrams called "ping.com" and
"tracert.com" after this they worked. (it was like they where overrideing the
exe programs) I was wondering if anyone know what causes this or makes those
programs and if there is anything that uses them.

This is caused by malware or by viruses.
