a question was posed to me that i can't answer (even at distrowatch and
other similiar sites):

"What is a good live distro bootable cd to learn linux with WITHOUT a
GUI but with: Banner, wall, mail, pine, xmail, fortune (yes, including
banner and fortune), etc. most of the linux command line utils
(including network setup and text browser such as lynx)" ?

make sense?

Indeed!

Try Slackware:
http://slax.linux-live.org/

Additional modules:
http://slax.linux-live.org/modules.php

The CD has a gui but it doesn't boot into it automatically. (startx at the
command prompt will bring up the gui).

http://slax.linux-live.org/download.php
is the download page and gives a number of versions including

"SLAX Frodo Edition v 5.0.5

SLAX Frodo edition is the console base for all other SLAX releases. It
doesn't contain almost anything, only full working Linux command prompt
and drivers."

and you can add the modules you need.

Another possibility is to use almost any live CD and use the appropriate
"cheat code" to boot without the gui. For example starting the Knoppix
live CD and pressing F2 will give extra options, one of which will be text
mode only.

Hope this helps

It does! Thanks!

It does! Thanks!

Another possibility is to install ZipSlack on a FAT32 hard disk

"To install ZipSlack, all you need to do is unzip the file ZIPSLACK.ZIP on
the DOS partition where you want Linux installed.............

...........unzip program should extract the files in the archive and save
them to the disk. It will create a \LINUX subdirectory on the disk.

..........You're finished! That's it. You now have a bootable Linux
installation ready to go. Take a look at the Booting page for information
about how to boot ZipSlack."

Effectively, you have a text mode Linux install in its own seperate
sub-directory which can be booted from within Windows.

See: - http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/

All the best
Gordon

It is very important to extract ZipSlack to the top level directory of
whatever drive you decide to install it to.

Basically all of them. Just exit from the GUI and run the program you want
from the cli. But you need to make sure that cdrom *contains* the programs
you want to run before you download the iso.

You should be able to find this out from the www site you downloaded the .iso
from.
