Pictures Disappeared...

HELP! I have been working for weeks on a presentation that has 152 slides -
each with pictures and many with animations. It was fine when i saved and
closed it yesterday afternoon but when I opened it today the majority of the
picures were replaced with white placeholders with large red X's in the
middle. Is there any way to retrieve the pictures? And what happened to cause
this?

Fortunately I have a backup copy that is working but it does not contain
changes made in the past 2 days... Is there a limit to the size of a
presentation?

Wow - that's a rarity - someone with a backup - woo hoo!

it's not so much a size limit (e.g. file size or number of slides).... more
of.... give powerpoint less to do, the better/safer it is.

Are these pictures all JPGs ?
with lots of pixels ?
