My wife's computers photos are all distorted looking yet everything else is
fine. I don't see a way to attach a photo to this but I can e-mail anyone
some photos to see what it's doing. Thanks in advance

What is the file extension of these pictures? The file extension is the
three letters after the "dot" in the file name. Example: mypic.jpg. If you
can't see extensions, go to Folder Options>View tab and uncheck "hide file
extensions...".

With what program are you trying to open the photos? How were they
created/saved? Are other image files OK or just these?

More details, please.

Most are jpg. Newer ones are OK, it seems that all before a certain date
became corrupted somehow (over a year ago). I am opening them with Windows
Picture Manager just by clicking on them. They are black when you attempt to
open them. They also appear distorted in the thumbnail view. Many were
downloaded via Canon software for my wife's camera, but were fine up until
that certain time frame when the photos appeared corrupted.

I'm sorry but there's no way I can guess what happened over a year ago. If
the pictures are corrupted, delete them. There is no way to get them back
except by restoring from backup.

Hmm, Canon camera; mine creates strange jpg's for some reason that pic
mgr doesn't like.

Distortion of the thumbnail view is a bad sign. Lots of times that's a
symptom of a backup program that had problems restoring the pictures.

I don't remember the run down anymore, but Canon used one of the
lesser used jpg formats (there are several of them) and simple graphics
programs don't like them.
You might try the fax viewer or anything else you have that will
handle jpg's. I know XP's Paint can open jpegs; try that one too.
I'm wondering if you could find ZoomBrowser or whatever came with the
camera if it wouldn't open them and let you save them to a different
format, maybe .gif.
You could try another image editor; irfanview is good, reads most
anything, and free for the download. I use PaintShop Pro X and it'll
open them but it refuses to save in the original format; it insists on
using its current jpg format which is fine and which is the one
everything else seems to be able to read OK.
That's assuming there's anything there to save.

Just off the top of my head,

Twayne

Thanks I figured I'd see if there was a way of fixing them. Initially they
were fine on the computer over year then something happened. Everything else
is stll fine that was stored on the drive since then.
