Picture IT cropping a circle

Help...How can I turn a square picture into a round
picture with just the middle part of the picture?

When I try cropping with the circle, the square part never
goes away.

What program are you doing the cropping with?
 
Can't .PNG files save with transparency too? GIF cuts the colors down to
256.

Yes, actually there are several formats that can be
used within Picture It! but since the OP did not say
how the cutout would be used, I thought .gif was the
most universal choice.

I guess you have to decide how many layers you
want to peel off of the onion :o)
