Can I post photos/links (photobucket) to this newsgroup to help show what I
mean in my post.

It is to help with the added (used) HDD to another PC.

Many thanks

Its not that you can't, it's that you are requested not to. This is
not supposed to be a binaries newsgroup, and binaries take up a lot of
hard drive if everyone started doing it. Most people post the photo to
some website and post a link in the question.

If you do, you will likely be chastised by several self-appointed
guardians of newsgroup netiquette, but you won't be fined, or
incarcerated, or even banned from further postings.

The general rule is that attachments should not be posted in non-binary
newsgroups (such as this one). You can always upload your images to one
of the many free image-hosting websites and provide appropriate links.
Some that come to mind at the moment include:

You might be able to, but most people won't see them, as they will be
stripped out of the message during propagation. Don't waste your time
and ours.

Hi there, thanks to all for your replies.

As meant in my OP - I would first of all post my question - then suggest
that I posted a link to photobucket (which I already use) - for you guys to
see what I mean.

So why is it impossible to post the *link* to your photo file? That's what
everyone else does. Links are just text.

Yes....post the 'links' to your photos.

Hi, Lem
Seems to me that M$ is making the rules for this newsgroup, since it is
hosted at msnews.microsoft.com. Except for those with a phobia against
newsgroups & newsreaders, or extremely slow internet connections, it makes
perfect sense to attach things that make it easier to understand the problem
or easier to fix the problem. I can think of few reasons why people would
not get this newsgroup directly from msnews.microsoft.com, so having the
helpful info attached just makes things so much easier. M$ does limit the
size of attachments; I usually crop graphics (typically screen shots) and
ensure that they are converted only once from clipboard raw format to a
compressed format via msPaint. I find that .PNG often yields the smallest
non-lossy attachment. Having the attachment posted somewhere else just
makes it more likely that it won't be accessible when you need it.

Apparently, your hybrid term "photos/links" is confusing a few people
here. But I know what you mean. :-)

Not only is it allowed; it is encouraged. Of course you may post a link
to a Web page so we can better see what you are talking about.

HI there, VanguardLH........hope you are having a nice day.....it is snowing
here.

As pointed out above...some "dudes" are getting confused...I'll accept the
blame for that.

I guess......"Can I post photos/links (photobucket) to this newsgroup to

Should have read - Can I post photos or the links to them (photobucket - as
I already use this website) to this newsgroup to help show what I mean in my
posts." I am asking as to whether anybody would object for any reason

My reason for asking is that when I used to use this newsgroup around ten
years ago....it was necessary to send attachments to people's personal email
address for some reason

Many thanks for your patience and understanding

You're not supposed to attach pictures to messages here. You may be
able to, but people will object, and most won't see your pictures
anyway because they will be removed by their news service.

Nobody would have any objection to you including a link to pictures
elsewhere on the net, as long as the site doesn't require membership to
view them.

I'm sure NOBODY wants you to send them pictures to their private email
address unless they first invite you to do so.

Regardless of who makes the rules here, and regardless of what you may
think makes perfect sense, must of us here will not open attachments,
because of the danger that they contain malware. So attaching things
hardly ever helps you.

The above is for someone else to debate.

I can see the logic of "no attachment" at all on the newsgroup.

Although, on my other post - I attached a screen shot in "paint" which I had
zipped up.

The person it was to "could not" see it, but I could see it this end.

Any ideas why it was "on the server" and I could see it, but she could not.

Steve

You can do whatever you want because this is a free world where yanks can
bomb anybody they don't like.

Have you got nice photos of naked women sucking a lolipop? Please post them
here because porn and Microsoft operating system has worked in tandem for
decades. no wonder everybody loves to hate M$.

Hope this helps.

We don't all use the same news server. You server may have had it, but
others might not.

Links are just text strings. Those are just fine in newsgroups posts UNLESS
they point at malicious, infected, or phish sites. Obviously such content
should not be openly exposed. If you have a question about such a site,
make sure it isn't a clickable link. Add spaces in it, like changing
http://www.phishsite.com to http:// www. phishsite. com, or munge it so that
it is no longer a valid URL string, like h**p://www.phishsite.c*m.
