Photo attachments that do not appear in the lower pane of E-mails

1. How do I open photos that do not display in the lower pane?
I use Windows Xp Outlook 2003. I'm new to using computers and just
learning to use the internet and E-mails. I get frustrated when I open an
E-mail and there are blank fields where photos should be.
Anyones assistance would be greatly appreciated; thank you.
 
Are there actually attachment icons in the mail item or boxes with Red X's
in them?
 
Yes, there are small boxes with red "X's" in them in the upper left corners.

If you use Word as the message editor, can you open or display them then?
Tools->options->mail format.

But, are you using Word as the message editor? Please answer yes or no.

If you change the format to HTML, do they show up?
