If one has to do phone activation, is the number given to you the new
product key and to be used if one has to reinstall XP?

Activation codes are hardware based, that is to say, based on the
hardware configuration at the time you activate XP. When they give the
activation code to you, write it down too. When you need to re-install
XP, providing the hardware configuration has not changed, the activation
code will work still.

They walk you through it and no notes need be taken. You enter the code at
the time you are speaking to the person on the phone. You can reinstall
without future activation if no major changes have been made. If you make
hardware changes that require reactivation the person on the phone will ask
and you indicate that you have indeed made these changes with no further
explanation. I have done this many times and the process has never changed.
motherboard replacement included. Complications only arise when people make
it so by asking totally obscure questions.
End of story.

To make a note of the activation code is simply to remove the need to
make a phone call.

If XP was to be re-installed, although no further activation is
necessary (providing no hardware changes have been made), you do still
need to re-enter the activation code.

I have seen the activation code resented to me at activation time. The
Phone call was for changing the code. But I guess the real answer to the
OP's question is that it is not the product key.

No. That activation code is good only for that particular activation.
Surely you noticed that the activation code contains 42 characters,
while the Product Key used during installation has only 25 characters?

Never had to phone activate, so, no I didn't notice. Thanks for the
clarification though.

No, it is only for that particular instance of Activation. If you have
to re-install use your original product key, if fails, do the phone
Activation again.

Then why are you asking about it in the first place?
