every so often (more often then not) when I reboot or shut down I get a
message that "Hammer of Thor" is not responding"
All well and good but I don't have any program or game named Hammer of Thor
or anything like that?
How can I find this program and delete, it seems to be running all be
itself!
I've run virus programs and never find any.

thanks

Click START, click RUN, and type in "msconfig.exe" (no quotes) and
press enter. When the configuration editor opens, click on the
STARTUP tab. Look for any reference to "Hammer of Thor". If you find
one, remove the checkmark from the box. Reboot.

You might also consider downloading and running an anti-spyware
program. It's possible you've picked up spyware along your travels on
the net. Also, don't use your real E-Mail address when posting to a
public forum like this one. That's an invitation to spam and virus's.

Very Interesting, I went to run msconfig.exe from the RUN it just flashes
and nothing.
I tried to run msconfig.exe from windows explorer
c:\winnt\binaries\msconfig.exe the program flashes the screen with the tabs
and then just closes itself??

Any reason for this?

thanks

Your description of the problem indicates that your computer is infected
with at least one virus. Scanning with a current (post-2002 version
using updated definitions) is the optimum solution; however, you may be
infected with viruses that immediately break antivirus programs. First
try using Stinger, a standalone av scanner that only checks for 39 of
the most common viruses. Take the infected machine off the Internet and
any lan immediately. From a different, unrelated computer download
Stinger from here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

You don't need to install this. Run it in Safe Mode. Hopefully it will
clean up the machine enough to enable you to install a full-featured av
and scan with that. Be sure to update the new av before you scan.

The reason for msconfig.exe acting that way on your system is very
likely the result of either a virus or spyware. Are you using a
anti-virus program that's up to date?

Go here to download a program which will seek out and destroy spyware
that may be lurking on your system:

Good luck and regards.

I ran stinger and I also ran Microtrend virus scan and another. no virus.
Ran 2 (lavasoft and another) spyware programs, found adware and others and
cleaned.
Still couldn't run msconfig.
the short of this is, after hours of looking found a program called
zonealarm.exe that is doing this.
even if I disable it finds a way to start running.
I did a search for the program and only found a file in the
c:\winnt\prefetch folder (not an exe file) I renamed it with no apparent
effect on computer or the zonealarm.exe.
any help?

Thanks

I'm able to run msconfig by doing a CTRL ATL DEL and ending the
zonealarm.exe.
But it keeps finding a way to restart itself after awhile.
I don't know what zonealarm.exe is?
would a legitimate program stop the use of msconfig.exe?
is zonealarm.exe a program that sounds familiar to anyone?

thanks

ZoneAlarm is a WELL KNOWN third part firewall that thousands and thousands
of computer users have.

Do NOT disable it. It stops many problems from getting downloaded onto your
machine (as well as stopping adware and other crap--if already on your hard
drive--from calling out to the internet without your permission).

Do you have zonealarm installed?
If not, it may be a rogue program pretending to be zonealarm.
Make a copy of msconfig.exe and rename it to msconfig.com.
You should be able to run the .com version to see what is running in the
background.

Sorry for so many questions. One more.
Does this zonealarm.exe disable msconfig.exe?
Everytime I disable zonealarm.exe I'm able to use msconfig.exe when it
(zonealarm.exe) is running I can't run msconfig.exe?

Thanks again

You have the SpyBot-BW trojan.
Follow the link below to find instructions to remove it.
FYI, "zonealarm.exe" is the trojan.
There is a real security program by that name, but that is not what you have
on your system.

WRONG! This is NOT zonealarm by zonelabs.
This is the SpyBot-BW trojan.
It uses the name "zonealarm.exe" to hide itself.
Disable it at once.
