Ok after uninstalling a program or two I all of the sudden have a phantom
folder that wasn't there before. The folder is not displaying like a regular
folder...ie..it is not labeled or anything. Just a plain yellow folder. If
I double click it nothing happens, if I right click it I get "Explore",
"Open", "Create Shortcut". I cannot view it unless I click on Explore. When
I do that it brings up the Desktop. This is located within the My Computer
area. Can someone help me figure this out please?

TIA

Lonnie

Right click the folder and click Properties.

On the General tab:

What's its name?
Listed in the box at the top.

What's its Type?
Just below the box at the top.

What's the Location?
Below the Type.

If it says Target type instead of Type, the folder is a shortcut to a
folder. There will also be a Target box, that inof can be highlighted and
copied.

One at a time highlight the info, right click, select Copy and paste into
Notepad or whatever.

Paste all of that into a message and post back.

Lonnie,
When I do click it, it brings up the desktop within explorer.

Which one?
Look in the Address bar.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Desktop

Or maybe it just says Desktop in the Address bar?

If so, click on the Folder icon on the toolbar in Windows Explorer or My
Computer to show the tree view in the left hand, Folders pane.

Is it the very first item in the Folders pane on the left?

I am just shooting from the hip here. ;-)

Hi Lonnie,

Desktop is the first item in the hierarchy in the Folders pane, that's
normal. No path at all, just Desktop, with the desk blotter, pad and pencil
icon.

I am guessing that the item on your Desktop might be Show Desktop.scf, the
Show Desktop Icon that you would normally see on Quick Launch.

Can you just left click on it, hold down and drag it to the recycle Bin?

Files with the .scf extension do not normally show the extension, so Show
Desktop.scf appears as just Show Desktop.

Doing a Search for Hidden files using *.scf will locate all .scf files. You
can do that to see if the phantom shows up as a .scf file.

HOW TO: Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302347

If you do not do the Advanced Search not all of the *.scf files will be
found.

I have these four .scf files...
C:\WINDOWS\explorer
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\Wesley P. Vogel\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop
C:\WINDOWS\system32\View Channels

explorer.scf, 2 Show Desktop.scf and View Channels.scf
--------

This should be roughly the hierarchy of the Folders pane when in C:\

Desktop
[+] My Documents
[-] My Computer
.....[+] 3½ Floppy (A:)
.....[-] Local Disk (C:)
.........[+] Documents and Settings
.........[+] Program Files
.........RECYCLER (Hidden folder)
.........System Volume Information (Hidden folder)
.........[+] WINDOWS
.....[+] CD Drive (D:)
.....[+] CD Drive (E:)
.....[+] Control Panel
[+] My Network Places
Recycle Bin

Of course you will probably have more folders showing, or more or less
drives.

Thanks for the reply. I did that search option you mentioned but it didn't
show up. I have pretty much the same as you when I do the search, but mine
are only 3
C:\Documents and Settings\Lonnie\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop
C:\Windows\explorer
C:\Windows\system32\View Channels

Those are the only ones that show up. I don't see anything relating to a
plain yellow folder like I mentioned in the original post. Oh well, I
appreciate you helping out as much as you could. I don't know how I'm going
to get rid of it, or what caused it, or whether it's going to cause problems
on the system at a later date. I just wish I could get everything back to
the way it was. If nothing else, I guess I can just start with a fresh new
system install (man I hate doing that, but oh well :( )

Thanks for the help.

Hey Plato, thanks for the reply. None of that worked for me. The problem
lies within "My Computer", and that could be why it didn't work, not sure.
There is not even an option to delete. I can't highlight it and use the
delete key either. I hate it, but it looks like I'll just have to start
fresh, as I don't want it to cause a problem later down the road.

By the way, is there a way to get access to "My Computer" folder via Dos
prompt? I've actually had this type of problem before in older versions of
Windows and took care of it by rebooting in safe mode with dos and getting
rid of it that way. I can't seem to find this folder in dos. Is it possible?

Lonnie,

First, see if you can rename the phantom. Even it there is no name that
appears, there should be a space for the name. Can you click that area once
and then click it again so that it becomes open for renaming? Or click that
area once and then hit F2 on the keyboard and then rename it to ABC or
something.

If that did not work, which it probably didn't.

Let's see if we can figure out the NAME of the Phantom. If we can, we can
use the command prompt to delete it.

First, the Desktop you see is a combination of two folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
or
%allusersprofile%\Desktop
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Desktop
or
%userprofile%\Desktop

%allusersprofile% is an environment variable that is the path to the All
Users folder. Usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.

%userprofile% is an environment variable that is the path to the logged on
user's home folder. Usually C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here.

Both of those variables are shorter and easier to type.

This explains the commands below.

Dir displays a list of directories and files in the %userprofile%\Desktop or
%allusersprofile%\Desktop folders.

/b uses bare format, no date, time or size listed.

/a displays the names of all files, including hidden and system files.

/o displays the names of the directories, sorted in alphabetic order and
then displays the names of files, sorted in alphabetic order.

The following commands will place files called AUdirlist.txt and
Udirlist.txt on your Desktop. AUdirlist.txt should list everything in the
All Users\Desktop and Udirlist.txt should list everything in your Desktop
folder.

Open a command prompt, click Start, click Run, type: cmd and click OK.

Type or paste the following line including everything as shown and hit your
Enter key...

dir "%allusersprofile%\Desktop"/b/a/o>"%userprofile%\Desktop\AUdirlist.txt"

A short time after you hit Enter AUdirlist.txt should appear on your
Desktop.

Type or paste the following line Including everything as shown and hit your
Enter key...

dir "%userprofile%\Desktop"/b/a/o>"%userprofile%\Desktop\Udirlist.txt"

A short time after you hit Enter Udirlist.txt should appear on your Desktop.

Open both AUdirlist.txt and Udirlist.txt and see if you can figure out a
NAME for the Phantom. The folders should be listed first before any files.

I created a folder without a name on my Desktop (I typed Alt + 0160 for a
No-Break Space for the folder name). The folder appears with no name on my
Desktop but in the Udirlist.txt it was listed as ÿ.

If none of that works....

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Lonnie,

OK, having done some research I have some information from Bert Kinney Tues,
Sep 25 2001 and PCForrest Fri, Jul 20 2001.

Several apps have been known to leave a "folder" in
My Computer after uninstalling. It may be a NameSpace item.

It may be a namespace item rather than a folder so you can't delete it in
the normal sense. However, you can remove it from the registry - which is
where it originates.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to this key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

1. Right click on the NameSpace folder in the left hand pane and click on
Export.
2. Export Registry File dialog should open.
3. Click on the Desktop icon on the Places Bar (the left hand pane).
4. Type: NameSpace in the File name box.
5. Click On the Save as type V button.
6. Select Text Files (*.txt).
7. Click the Save button.
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Locate NameSpace.txt on your Desktop and double click it.
10. Hit Ctrl + A to select all of the text.
11. Hit Ctrl + C to copy all of the text.
12. Paste that text into a message and post back.

If somehow NameSpace got saved as NameSpace.reg, right click it and rename
it to NameSpace.txt and click YES to the prompt that pops up.

We'll see if there is something with No Name that can be deleted.

There may be more than one <NO NAME> entries, some should NOT be deleted.

There will be several CLSIDs, like {21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
for example, which is the Control Panel.

Post back and we'll figure out which CLSID to get rid of.

Lonnie, I have narrowed it down to these three items.

This entry has to do with having some kind of Mobile Device like a Pocket PC
or a phone or a portable music deal or a PDA. Also has something to do with
ActiveSync. Do you have any kind of mobile device that you plug into your
PC? Mobile Device would show up in My Computer.

Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{49BF5420-FA7F-11cf-8011-00A0C90A8F78}
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Mobile Device

I have NO idea what this is. Google search brings up NOTHING for
{4AFB2C0E-9D16-4478-AEF4-C3FC539961E4} I suspect that this may be the
culprit.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{4AFB2C0E-9D16-4478-AEF4-C3FC539961E4}

This entry appears to have been added by Windows Live Messenger or another
form of Messenger. Are you using any form of Messenger? This adds
Messenger Sharing Folders to My Computer, apparently with the name of My
Sharing Folders. If you removed Windows Live Messenger, this may be the
one.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComp
uter\NameSpace\{FC9FB64A-1EB2-4CCF-AF5E-1A497A9B5C2D}
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_SZ
Data: Messenger Sharing Folders

Let's delete what I suspect is the problem, but we'll save a backup .reg
file first, just in case.

Open regedit and navigate to ..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComp
uter\NameSpace\{4AFB2C0E-9D16-4478-AEF4-C3FC539961E4}

1. Right click on the {4AFB2C0E-9D16-4478-AEF4-C3FC539961E4}
folder in the left hand pane and click on Export.
2. Export Registry File dialog should open.
3. Click on the Desktop icon on the Places Bar (the left hand pane).
4. Type: temp in the File name box.
5. Save As should default to .reg, which is the file type we want this time.
6. Click the Save button.
7. This should save the file as temp.reg as a backup in case deleting it
causes a problem.

Now right click on the {4AFB2C0E-9D16-4478-AEF4-C3FC539961E4}
folder in the left hand pane and click on Delete. Click Yes to the prompt
that pops up. Close the Registry Editor.

You may have to reboot to see any change on your Desktop or in My Computer.

If you have any problems, double click on temp.reg on your Desktop and click
Yes to the prompt to add it back to your registry. Or right click on
temp.reg, click on Merge and click Yes to the prompt.

If you have no problems, temp.reg can be deleted later.

If you still have the phantom folder, you can try the same thing for the
other two items. It depends on if you still have a mobile device or some
form of Messenger and need those folders. I have no way of knowing that.

Thanks Wesley, that did the trick. It was the one that you suspected,
although I got a little ahead and got rid of the other ones pertaining to the
mobile device earlier when I converted that .reg to a .txt. When I saw that
mobile stuff in there it made me think. I'm pretty sure that this problem
started after I uninstalled the mobile device, or at least I tried to
uninstall it. I clicked on "Remove" within "Add and Remove Programs" for
that mobile device and it didn't do a thing. So I got rid of it via the
Registry Editor, and then deleted the folders. Now however, the system is
still under the impression that a mobile device is installed and everytime I
bring up Windows Media 11 it tells me that the driver is outdated and don't
work with version 11 and to upgrade it.

:) Man all I wanted to do was give the Zen Micro to my son after I
upgraded, and I suspect that it led to all this crap I've had to go through,
and that you've so graciously helped me with.

So how would I go about getting rid of the driver that has stuck around?
Thank you very much for your help.

I have no idea what the driver might be. Read on, MacDuff. ;-)

DISABLE the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service. Maybe you won't get
reminded. You do not need it running anyway.

See this, applies to WMP 11 also, I believe.

The Windows User Mode Driver Framework service (Wdfmgr.exe) appears in
Windows Task Manager after you install Windows Media Player 10

I just got WMP 10 a short while ago and I think it is a real POS. WMP 11 is
even worse.

This should Display Devices That Are Not Connected in the Device Manager.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click
Command Prompt.
2. At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

3. Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

start devmgmt.msc

4. Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager.

NOTE: Click Show hidden devices on the View menu in Device Manager
before you can see devices that are not connected to the computer.
5. When you finish troubleshooting, close Device Manager.

I have no idea where this might be listed. Look for mobile device or a
black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field, a red "X", a blue "i" on a
white field or a green question mark "?". Those all show some kind of
conflict, like messed up drivers.

Locate the old mobile device, right click it and select Uninstall.

Ok Weslety thanks. I had already uninstalled it via the device manager way,
but the message keeps coming up and the system keeps acting like it's still
installed (with windows media 11 anyway). I don't however get the message
with version 10. Maybe I'll just go back to version 10 :) that would be
the easy way, I think I'll take it for now.

Thank you for all your help, I really appreciate it.
