Recently, when I activate Excel I get a blank file named Personal
instead of Book1. I can't find any reference to Personal.xls in any of
my Excel folders so I can delete it. When I activate Excel again, the
message "Personal.xls is read only ..etc" and then the file that is up
is Book1. The Personal file aslo comes up when I activate an Excel
program (my own) and both files are open. Thanks..Gary Hardy.

Hi
the file personal.xls is used to store your macros. It resided in your
Excel startup folder.
Open Excel. Hide this file ('Windows - hide') and close Excel

Personal.xls is the name given to the default workbook that is created
when you record a macro. It resides in the XLSTART folder (exact
location varies with version). As with any file in that folder, it opens
when XL starts up.

Normally, Personal.xls is hidden (Windows/Hide) and doesn't interfere
with anything. However, you can delete it if you wish - just realize
you'll lose any macros stored there.

Most people who use a personal.xls workbook use it to store macros that they
want available each time excel opens.

So if you have macros that you want to use on any worksheet, you could put them
there.
