Hello all - I'm trying to figure out an easy(ish) way to ensure that all
users (more properly, all XP Pro computers) in the domain have the idential
association for a particular file extension (for Avery Dennison's label/data
files). I've done all sorts of googling but I am not having any luck.

The software is installed locally on all the workstations and runs when one
manually associates the label file extension.

The users have functioning roaming profiles, but I'd really prefer that this
be a per-computer/all user thing.

I would be happiest using a GPO (startup script, even?), or a registry
change that can be easily run on all PCs, or at this point, a lucky rabbit's
foot. Am I missing something really obvious?

Have you considered writing a script to use the assoc command line available
in XP. If you set up the file association through the GUI then drop to the
command line and run "assoc". This will display the association that has
been created. Then this can be converted into a command line e.g

assoc .dav=txtfile - for example

You could also do this via reg keys but the command line is quick and
simple.

Are you trying to associate a file extension with the .exe that it opens
with, for all XP workstations in domain?
Can't help, but so am I - it seems such an obvious need, there must be a way!

If you are tying to create a new association type have you looked at using
the Ftype command to create a new file type "wizapp" that is associated with
c:\sampleapp.exe. Then use the assoc command to associate the wizapp with
the file extension

I had tried both that, and ftype - subsequently running 'assoc' showed the
right file type & the extension, but it didn't work. I just double checked
and I think I may have had a typo in the ftype command...am testing again.
Thanks for your reply!
