Would I be right in assuming that if by adding lots (i.e. around 20 -
30) of objects to performance monitor, then performance will actually
degrade on the machine?

I think that's a given. The real question is, at what point would it
become noticeable? trial and error is only way to find out.
 
In addition to Bob's comments remember that you can also connect remotely
with Performance Monitor.
