I've got a P3 866 with 1.5 gigs of memory on an Asus CUV4X board and
have been thinking of upgrading to a P4. What kind of performance
increase can I expect from the upgrade? Thanks.

You'll need a new motherboard and ram, too, and probably a new power
supply as well....

Well, based on the applications and model P4 you mentioned, I'd say about
this --> <-- much.

Seriously, with P4s ranging from 1.3 to 3.6 gig and not even a hint of what
you'd use it for, it's impossible to say.

A better upgrade would be to an Athlon 64. why buy another 32 bit
processor when AMD 64 bit processors are so affordable. Of
course the Athlon 64 requires a new motherboard, new ram,
and probably a new power supply, but so would a Pentium 4.

Also keep in mind that the benchmarks there are for the Athlon 64
using 32 bit Windows and 32 bit applications. Expect even better
results when using 64 bit Windows to run 32 bit aoolications, and
much more of a performance boost running 64 bit applications
using 64 bit Windows. The nice thing about the Athlon 64 is that
it will run 64 bit applications side by side with 32 bit applications
when a 64 bit operating system is used.

Here is a link to an interesting 64 bit application.

Expect to see many 64 bit applications and 64 bit Windows
for the Athlon 64 in early to mid '05(Windows 64 beta is now
a free download). Linux 64 bit for the Athlon 64 is available now,
as are 64 bit Linux compilers for a few higher level languages.

The truth hurts?

I guess it annoys him when people point out that Intel is pricing many
of its (older technology) 32 bit chips higher than AMD is pricing its
Athlon 64 3000+ socket 754, which seems to be only around $150.
The Athlon 64 3000+ is a great performer, beating an $810
Pentium 4 3.2 ghz EE in Doom 3.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2149&p=7

It also beats a Pentium 4 3.2 ghz($210) in business Winstone 2004,
and many other benchmarks.

Keep in mind that those benchmarks only measure the Athlon 64
using 32 bit Windows with 32 bit applications. With 64 bit software
and a 64 bit OS, the full potential of the Athlon 64 will be unleashed.

Nope, it's the constant Intel bashing with the refusal to accept that there
is a possibility that Intel might have an edge somewhere.

This JK person has to be more than a bubble off plumb....

Why? Since I am not an Intel lover? Since I wouldn't pay a high price
for a 32 bit processor? Imo 32 bit desktop processors should be
budget processors priced under $100.

no because you only come out of the closet when AMD publishes some
increase that puts it ahead of Intel................for a bit...then
you disappear

Ya I hear that, same thing happens on the AMD side, there will always be
the cheerleaders who think their brand does it all and better. **** em!
