PERFMON.EXE doesn't "see" new machine

Norbert

I've been using PERFMON to monitor various functions for the machines on my
"Home LAN".

We had three machines (1 Windows 2000, 2 XP Pro) and recently added a new
machine that came with Windows XP HOME installed. I have no problems
accessing any of the original three machines, but when I try to monitor
anything on the Windows XP Home machine I get the following messages from
"perfmon.exe":

· Unable to access performance data from the remote computer.

· Computer name not found

I can SEE the machine listed in the Workgroup, but that's as far as I can
get.

I can access drives, files and folders in the normal fashion, so I'm not
sure what I need to do to accomplish my little monitoring goals.

Perhaps add a "specific user" to the HOME machine?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Norbert,

Sounds like a firewall issue to me. Do you have ICF (Network Connection
Properties - Advanced) enabled on the new machine? Is so, try opening the
following ports: TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the LAN is running on a router and all the
other machines a getting through fine.

Norbert,

ICF is a personal firewall that comes with Windows XP, and I believe is enabled
by default with newer versions. It will cause the symptoms you're describing.

Check your Network Connection Properties - Advanced, and see if it's enabled.
If so, disable it and see if your problem continues.

I'm working on the same problem and believe that
the true cause is the XP Home does not support
remote registry, which is required by perfmon.

I think, basically, we're screwed.

I( don't run XP's firewall.

Norbert,

Check your Local Security Settings (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local
Security Policy). Under User Rights Assignment, do you have a policy for Debug
programs?
