Sorry no followup until now.

My machine got so bad I had to do a new install, including SP2 + 35
subsequent updates.

I very much appreciate both of you making so much effort to help me!!!

Now is an ideal opportunity to place your PC operation on a more
stable platform, by doing this:
- Split the disk: 10..15 GBytes for Windows, the rest for your data.
- Load Windows
- Load all apps
- Use an imaging program (e.g. Acronis) do save a snapshot of your
system drive on drive D: (or even better: on an removable disk).

If you ever have another unsolvable problem, spend 30..60 minutes
in an attempt to solve it, then restore the snapshot. It will give you
a guaranteed solution in less than 30 minutes!
