Make your life easy - get a cable/dsl router. You will connect the
router to your cable/dsl modem and the two computers will be connected
to the router with ethernet cable (straight-through, not crossover). If
you want to share files between the machines, create identical user
accounts/passwords on both computers. Run Samba on the Mac. Share out
desired resources on each machine, and there you go.

You must use crossover cable to connect two computers directly. Check
out the sites that LaManchaDQ gave you regarding how to set up
networking that way.

Actually, with the newer Macs the Mac doesn't care what kind of cable it is.
You can use either crossover or straight through.
The following is a discussion that you should read about this type of direct
connection.

Don't you just love learning new stuff? That's the biggist kick I get out
of life. My philosophy is "everyone knows something that I can learn from."
So when I can share stuff, it also makes my day. Malke, thank you for
making my day.
