Just moved from one PC to an upgrade. Also from Word 2000 and Adobe 5.0 to Word 2003 and Adobe 6.0. Which were preinstalled on this computer.

On the new Word toolbar there's no Adobe PDF Maker button. I'd gotten used to it and don't like going the Print-Select Adobe route.

I cannot find the PDFMaker.dot file anywhere on my C drive.

Should/must I reload Adobe?

Hi, TimSpeak. In Word, click on View | Toolbars. Is PDFMaker a choice, and is it checked? If not, click on Tools | Templates and Addins. Is PDFMaker.dot listed as a choice, and is it checked? If not, then reinstalling may fix the problem. You mention that both Acrobat 6.0 and Word 2003 were preinstalled, so you won't know which was installed first. Word must be installed before Acrobat in order for the Acrobat buttons to be installed into Word.

I have taken Adobe Acrobat training and the instructor there stated that
Acrobat must always be installed LAST for those icons to appear.
Any service packs this shouldn't be necessary but if Office was
reinstalled...or if Acrobat came PREinstalled and then Office was
installed...then Acrobat MUST be reinstalled to get the Icons on the office
toolbars again.

I just accepted the newest update today and now my Acrobat icon's no

I seem to have this problem with word only as the icon has always shown up in my excel program.

For the Adobe icons to appear in Word, the pdfmaker.dot add-in must be
installed in the correct Office startup folder. If Office/Word is installed
after Acrobat then this folder may not be present and thus the add-in not
installed. Locate the add-in in the Acrobat folder C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\PDFMaker and copy it to the correct folder, which
for Word 2003 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP.

Only if the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\PDFMaker does not
contain the add-in, should it be necessary to reinstall Acrobat.

Ok, I looked for the PDFmaker file and it is in the word startup file.

I tried today to uninstall both the Acrobat and the woed and then reinstalled word first and then acrobat. I am still having the same problem (no acrobat icons in word).

This is very frustrating and it seems a fairly common problem. Why has microsoft not recognized this and done something about it. I hold microsoft responsible here because the acrobat icon is on my excel program and power point but not in the word program.

If you wish to address you question to Microsoft then you should so so -
this is a public forum and not a Microsoft staffed help desk.

Microsoft has no control or responsibility for the production of (poor
quality) add-ins produced by third party suppliers - and that from Adobe is
badly written. However, the problem here remains that the add-in
(pdfmaker.dot) should be located in the OFFICE start-up folder and that must
be the correct Office folder for the Word version.

Check the macro security is set to trust all installed templates and
add-ins.

I have a similar problem with the PDF maker icon, which sometimes
appears on the toolbar and sometimes not. I have verified that the
PDFmaker.dot is in the correct directory (folder) and that the macro
security is set to trust all installed templates and add-ins.
Moreover, Adobe is listed as a trusted entity. But alas, this still
has not helped. I don't understand why sometimes I get the
icons/toolbar and sometimes not. It doesn't always appear after a
re-boot, although sometimes that helps. I had this problem in Word
2002 and Acrobat 5.0.5 and still have it after upgrading to Word 2003.

I realize that intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose, but
I would appreciate any further insights you may be able to provide.

Thank you,

Graham,

Sorry for my venting earlier on microsoft. I value the help of this group and will limit my comments in the future to only the matter at hand.

Thank you all again for your input. I am greatly relieved to have this solved.

You can vent all you like about Microsoft - but if you do it here you will
miss your target. Glad that the problem is resolved. :)

Word 2002 and 2003 use different Office start-up folders
Acrobat 5 needs the latest update in order to work correctly with Word 2003.
When it doesn't appear, is it shown listed and unchecked in tools >
templates and add-ins, or missing altogether?

I'm working with Office 2003. In Exel my Adobe Toolbar is installed,
but I could not find it in Word.

If you want to see the Toolbar PDF Maker 6.0 in Word, you have to
insert a macro.
Make a right-click on the Toolbar->customize->commands select macros
and drag the AdobePDFMaker.AutoExec.AddOurToolbar macro onto the
Toolbar. Now click the macro button and you will see the Adobe
PDFMaker 6.0 Toolbar. Now just remove the macro from your toolbar and
the Adobe Toolbar will be saved automaticly... .

Thats the only way I've found to insert the Toolbar.

Hi, Graham
I have the same problem (I think).

Under Tools > Macros > Security, "Trust all installed add-ins and templates"
is checked and Adobe Systems is listed as a Trusted Publisher.

PDFMaker.dot is in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP

Nevertheless, the PDFMaker button is not on my Word menu bar.

When the IT guy rebuilds my computer from scratch, the Adobe PDF button is
there and it works. But after a week or so, it disappears, even though I've
changed nothing (that I know of).

I don't have to have the button on my menu bar if I can find some other way
to access the "Change Conversion Settings" functions for mapping custom Word
headings to PDF TOC bookmarks.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

What other add-ins do you have installed?
Why does your computer need rebuilding from scratch (more than once)?
Is the add-in listed and unchecked in the tools > templates and add-ins
dialog?
Is the toolbar listed and unchecked in view > toolbars?
Is this Word 2003?

I have been having the same trouble as all of you...stable in other Office
programs but very unstable and sporatic in Word. This seems very strange. I
wouldn't even worry about it if, when I used Adobe Distiller or PDF Writer
through the print command it would retain links...but it does not. I have to
have PDF Maker. This is definetley a beating!! Have Acrobat 5.0/Word 2002/
Macros-allow all/Trust Adobe & Microsoft. (Oh well...just wanted to vent and
I'm so glad to see that it's not me!!! Obviously very common issue...I will
probably point Adobe to this discussion)
