pdf files result in a little X

Hi. Would somebody tell me what is going on? When I try and view a
PDF file only a little x shows up in the upper left corner. I have
adobe reader and have looked at many, many pdf files in the past. Is
there something else I need to download? Many thanks to the person who
sets me straight. Dan Cutter
