Is there any freeware programs that allow me to use my pocket PC with GPS as

A GPS tells you where you are, not which way north is. Since you
can't use a GPS as a compass, adding a pda to a GPS doesn't allow you
to use a GPS as a compass.

It's like adding a knife to a fork doesn't allow you to use a knife as
a cup.

A compass needs something that can sense magnetism. A piece of iron,
a Hall-effect device - something like that. Software can't determine
direction of the magnetic poles.

I beg to differ, as my Garmin emap shows compass direction both on the
move and stationary...

If you turn it without moving it, it shows a change of direction? Then
there's a magnetic sensor in it. My GPSIII+ doesn't show direction
without motion. Neither do any of my other GPS receivers. Neither
does GPS technology allow for it. (GPS calculates instant location,
not direction. Direction is a secondary effect of change in
location.)
