In home environment with a router connecting two PC's Windows XP Media
Center Edition and 6Mbps cable hookup I get occasional "no connection
to the Internet" messages, "do I want to work off line or retry".

What's up with this?

Thanks.

Poor signal. It may be"always on", but it is most assuredly not "always
working".

I think there's a bug in Windows XP. I get the same message
occasionally, even when everything is working right.

Open a command prompt window and ping a web site like "google.com" or
"yahoo.com". If the ping succeeds, your Internet connection is OK.
In that case, don't click "Work Offline" or "Retry. Close the window
containing the message and try accessing the Internet again.

I rarely see that message on my PCs that have wired links to the router,
and I fairly-frequently see that message on one of my PCs that has a
wireless link to the router. One cause of that message in my house is
opening the door to the fridge, although it did get better when I put
a higher-gain antenna on the router.

Start by analysing the problem. Run PingPlotter, and see if you're losing
connectivity to the router, or to between the router and the Internet.

This could possibly be an MTU setting problem.

And it's not impossible that your DNS setup could cause your symptoms.
