{re-post}

From other forums I have received some pretty contradictory thoughts
from some pretty smart folks on the subject of migration software.
Can you please tell me what are the feelings in this group re the
effectiveness of these products?

On my last new machine, I used PCRelocator to transfer both my
applications and data from old to new. (I was transferring from a
Win98 machine to XP). It actually worked pretty well. But that was
about four years ago.

I am wondering if anyone has had any recent experience with this
product in the most current XP environment? Or, does anyone know of a
more user-friendly and/or trustworthy product that they would give a
higher recommendation?

Thank you very much, in advance, for any thoughts,
D.

Thanks Wes,
I have read this article and indeed it is pretty good.
However, at the bottom of the page there is a link to KB 304903, "List
of programs that FAST will transfer the settings of". This list is a
bit meager. However, it was last updated in Nov 2001, so maybe FAST
is more robust by now(?). Do you know where there is a more current
list?

Thanks again,
D.

Gary Woodruff has a pretty good article here...

David,

List of Programs Whose Settings Are Migrated When You Use the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304903

That sure has some real winners listed; MusicMatch Jukebox, QuickTime, Real
Jukebox 2 Basic and Real Player 8 Basic.

No I do not know any more about program settings that FAST can transfer.

Thanks, Wes,

Yep, that is the list I was looking at. Though popular, I just don't
use any of the programs that you have listed below.

For my needs, I don't find even MS Office, which I do use constantly.

But anyway, thank you for trying to help me.

Regards,
D.

I was being facetious with "some real winners", I refuse to have anything to
do with any of those programs.

With MS Word, most of the settings are in the registry.

Most of this applies to other versions as well. Substitute 10.0 or 11.0 for
9.0 in Office\9.0\Word and Office\9.0\Common, etc.

Where settings are stored in the registry for Word 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=212242

Microsoft Office versions:
Microsoft Office 2003 = Word 2003 = 11
Microsoft Office XP = Microsoft Word 2002 = 10
Microsoft Office 2000 = Microsoft Word 2000 = 9
Microsoft Office 97/98 = Microsoft Word 97

I assume the same for other MS Office programs, though I do not have any
others installed.

LOL<g> -- I'm happy to hear that; I just didn't want to offend
anyone... <g>

Unfortunately though, Wes, I know virtually nothing about dealing with
the registry. (I know of REGEDIT, but have never used it.) Can
you tell me what to do with your below information when moving to a
new computer? (Or, if it is just too complicated to get into, I will
understand.) Or, maybe you can tell me what KBs I should read...

Most settings in Word are stored in the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word
depending on the version.

Ignore this key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
I think that it is for backward compatibility for stuff with Office 97.
Mine is pretty much empty.

However there are common Office settings in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 et cetera.

This will save a file called WDSettings.reg on your Desktop.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to the appropriate key >>
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0

Right click on the 10.0 (or whatever version) folder in the left hand pane.
Select Export.
Click on Desktop in the left hand pane (Places Bar).
Type a name in the File name box, like WDSettings.
Click the Save button.
Close the Registry Editor.

You can now send WDSettings.reg to the other machine.

I exported my HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 key to the
Desktop and it was 213 KB, that will fit on a floppy disk.

However you get WDSettings.reg to the other machine, when you do either
right click WDSettings.reg and select Merge or double click WDSettings.reg
and click YES to the prompt.

Similar to this.
---------------------------
Registry Editor
---------------------------
Are you sure you want to add the information in Path\to\WDSettings.reg to
the registry?
---------------------------
Yes No
---------------------------

That will merge the old settings into the registry.

Wes,
I know people hate to open posts that only say, "thank you"; but thank
you! You have provided me some real insights here! I will report
back when I get to this point. But still have a lot of front-end work
that must get done first...
Best Regards,
David

Hi David,

I don't mind too much seeing thank you, if I've helped. ;-)

Keep having fun.
