Actually your analogy is way off base! PCI-Express is a serial
interface and the standard PCI slots are parallel interface. so, there
is a considerable difference! For one, they are not even compatible.
So, they're not like PCI!

They're so effective, they're no faster than AGP 8X, which was only
minimally faster than 4X. However, as graphics cards get faster and faster,
expect them to become more effective. Also, SLI splits the bus, effectively
making each PCI-e slot 8X when using 2 cards, which it can make good use
of. Supposedly, an improved version of SLI is in the works that'll have 2
16x lanes.

Ahh but they are! "Like PCI" is so subjective it would be hard to make any
firm judgement. In fact to the end user, they're practically identical:
you plug a card in, and it does graphics stuff. And in this newer version,
at a (potentially) higher speed--hence express. ;)

So, then if we use your analogy, ISA slots are like PCI, there just
slower! They're both slots - Right?

However, in all cases the boards are NOT interchangeable. You cannot
put a PCI card in a PCI-Express slot! Neither can you put an ISA card
in a PCI slot. Or vice versa in both cases!

You know you have a point. The OP asked about PCIe *slots*; I was thinking
it was just about boards in general. Not that his question is particularly
intelligible, and not that my response wasn't just a joke.
