I am having trouble installing a Netgear WG311 PCI adapter in a PC,
the computer will not recognize the card and many times it will cause
the PC to freeze. I installed the software first, thats according to
the directions, and I also tried to install it with out the software
and have XP detect it but the computer will not see it. The card
works in other PC’s.
Thanks.
My system: Win XP
Pentium III 600MHz
192MB Ram
9GB HD space

bios switch
from AGP to PCI

how did you install the software first then the card? you had the old card
in?
possibly the new VIDcard ended up in 'other devices' in the device manager.
remove it from there.
remove all entries under 'display adapters'
reboot with the new card in place

Have you tried other slots? I would remove all other cards and try
installing the card (in a different slot). If it still does not work. I
would check for a bios update on the motherboard manufacturer's website.

Thanks for the quick response JAD; The Card is a Netgear WG311
Wireless adapter. Sorry, I wasn’t clear about that. My bad!
I didn't mention a video card in the system because that should not
have anything to do with the wireless card. Right?

Applying what JAD said to the wireless network adapter. There never
was a previous network adapter until now so there is none showing up
in device manager to remove. I also checked for “other devices”
Nothing there.
Thanks

lfine I was responding to two different posts at the same time...sorry.
You did what I meant to do/say.

Do know how to enter CMOS setup?
If so change the 'reset configuration data' switch to yes with your card
installed. In the instructions did it say to 'install software first'? and
did you do this?

IIRC, there's something on the Netgear support site about the WG311
setup. Check there for details.

What version PCI bus does your mobo have? Because I had no luck when I
tried three brands of PCI wireless cards, including Belkin, and D-Link,
in 440BX and 810i mobos, which have PCI ver. 2.1. The boxes for the
cards said that PCI ver. 2.2 was needed.

The wireless nic cards require PCI 2.2. Since you're using a PIII,
most likely your motherboard only has PCI 2.0 or 2.1. It won't work.
