I received a new PC a week ago. A few days afterwards, upon startup i received a message "run time error 71 - Disk not ready". Each time I got the message, I clicked OK and it went away. It did not seem to affect the performance.

I eventually downloaded Pc Bug Doctor, which informed that it had found 54 errors and offered to fix them for a fee

All of this leaves me with a few questions
1. What is the run time error and is it serious
2. Is Pc Bug Doctor worthwhile or simply a scam
3. What is my best course of action

Thanks for any and all help.

my guess, you got an infection and some adware that caused
the pop-up and wants to sell you a "service".

I'd turn on the firewall... maybe download Zone Alarm
www.zonelabs.com
download and run Ad-Aware and SpyBot (be sure to run their
updates)
www.lavasoftusa.com www.safer-networking.org
Update and scan for viruses

It is a good idea to NEVER buy anything from an unsolicited
ad that pops up.

You'd be creating more problems if you run,and install that trash..
XP has v.good repair utilitys already installed,3rd party utilitys will only caus
conflicts in the system.Runtime errors deal with allotment of memory, usually no
having enough ram and/or virtual memory not set right or again, not enough of it
To get specific info youre computer already has, open control-panel,ADM.,event-viewer
Chk system events for errors/warnings,use the links for info.,that opens help/support wit
more info.
