I am attempting an upgrade of win98 to winXP Pro. During
the first stage of the upgrade XP stops the process saying
the pcAnywhere 10.0 is blocking the upgrade. I have
unistalled pcAnywhere; uninstalled all other symantec
software; removed all related folders and their contents
from the harddrive; searched the registry and remove any
reference to pcanywhere and/or symantec. Still I get the
blocking software message and cannot continue the upgrade.

I am running into the same problem. It also blocks
Windoews 2000. I did all removals suggested by Symantec
and cleaned registry but still claims it is there. The
only resoponses i treceived when I posted messages was
either people pointuing to Symantec's site of removal
which I had done and even all items they knew related or
to tell me to do a clean install which is not realistic
with software an ddata I haev on machine. Any ideas for
solving this probl;em wiould be apprecuiated. It has to
be either a registry enty or a file setting taht Microsoft
uses to make this decision but to date no one has told me
what it is. If you have a thought please e-mail me also

It finally worked. I searched for all files and foildrs
with Norton or Symantec in name and deleted them all. I
aos serched thru registry for all such entries and deleted
them and then went back thru registry and found meore.
Then XP Pro loaded.

Hello Paul,

You can also look for any instances of WINAW32.EXE that remain on your
computer after you completed the uninstall of PC Anywhere. If you find
instances of WINAW32.EXE rename or delete them and attempt the upgrade
again.

Sincerely,
Jeff Wade [MS]
