windows XP very slow at doing anything even to open a file or folder need help its getting on my >>>>

very vague question but try disabling start up programs.

click start>run and type 'msconfig'

you will see a start up tab. the only programs you really need to start when
you turn on your computer are your anti-virus and firewall. identify those
and leave them 'ticked'.

anthing else that is ticked in the list can be unticked. programs that you
can safely untick are....

ms office, lotus, real or realplayer qttask (quicktime), msn or windows
messenger, musicmatch jukebox, aol tray icon, kazaa, nero, etc etc.

none are critical and only need starting when you actually use them.

beware that most programs are cheeky in this way because they automatically
add themselves to the start up when you install them. therefore you need to
do this each time you install a new program.

go to 'internet options' in the control panel and select 'delete cookies',
delete temp internet files ( do it twice, once with the box ticked to delete
offline content)

open 'my computer' and right click your hard drive. select properties and do
a 'disk clean up' (under the more options tab you can also choose to delete
all but the last restore point).

visit this link to check your browser for parasites......

http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

use 'adaware' to remove suspect files from your computer that you may have
collected over the internet.

click start>run and type 'msconfig'. under the 'start up' tab, uncheck all
those programs that are loading at start up (leave your firewall and anti
virus which you DO need at start up.

click start>run and type cmd. then type 'chkdsk /f' and follow the commands.

now and again run chkdsk /r (it takes longer) .

click start>run and type 'sfc /scannow'. insert your windows xp cd when
prompted.

once you've done all this, defrag your hard drive (start>all
programs>accessories>system tools)

The problem is with crl.verisign.com and is exacerbated if
you have Norton Anti-Virus installed. This problem should
clear up in a couple of days when Verisign deals with the
problem (DNS table entries pointing off into empty ether.)

In the mean time, this is what you can do to fix it
temporarily:

(Warning: this fix applies only if you have an active
internet connection. If you are experiencing these slow-
downs without being connected to the internet (dial-in,
DSL, cable, etc.) then the problem is most likely
something else and you shouldn't try this fix.)

Open your control panel and switch to classic view.
Open "Internet Options" and select the "Advanced" tab.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and uncheck "Check for
publisher's certificate revocation." Press "Apply"
and "Ok" and then reboot.

Everything should work much, much more quickly now. You
should re-enable the "Check for publisher's certificate
revocation" in a couple of days once Verisign gets its
problems worked out.
