pc won't wake from standby

If I go into standby, either based on idle time or by selecting it from
"turn off computer", then I can't wake it using mouse or keyboard. If I
press the power switch, then it comes on almost instantly, but is this
actually a reboot?

The MS knowledge base offers a download to cure this, but when I tried, I
got a message that this was already included in my SP1.

I've done a group search using google - it seems to be a common problem.
Most of the replies relate to "enabling wake up" on mouse and keyboard
settings, but I can't find where to set this using device manager.

Any suggestions?

Usually it should reply if you hold a key for a few
seconds. If it does respond to your power button, it
actually does NOT restart, it wakes it up again. So I
think that if holding a key for a few seconds does not
work, you should just keep using your power button, which
will wake it up.

Control panel \ system \ hardware \ device manager
Expand the mice area, right-click your mouse to bring up properties
Look for the power management tab, put a checkmark in the box that
allows the mouse to bring the computer out of standby.
apply and okay.
Do the same thing for the keyboard.
Reboot.

Hi Maureen
Problem is ... I don't have a power management tab or box in either mouse or
keyboard properties. This is probably why I couldn't follow the advice given
to previous posts.

Uhhhhhh...

Well, you really should have that option. There should also be one for
the modem (people sometimes wonder why the phone brings their
comptuters out of standby).

Some other standby problems can be cured by reinstalling or updating
the video drivers, but I'm perplexed that the power management option
doesn't even appear on yours.

Have you ever been able to use standby successfully with XP?

I suppose you could check the system files. Be sure to have your CD
handy.

RUN
cmd
sfc /scannow

It's only this week I've tried setting standby on the timer... I usually
either just use the "idle" settings, or switch PC off if I'm going to be
away from it for a while.

I run sfc under "command" every time I do a windows update... never had a
problem reported.

Mouse and keyboard are both described in device manager as "standard PS/2"

The problem isn't something I'm specially bothered about .. I,m just curious
about why it doesn't work.
