PC will not boot after Windows update installation

Since my Windows is OEM and HP seems to take forever with
no results... I'm wanted to ask for help.

I recently had a harddrive go bad on a HP Pavilion. Just
bought another one and installed it using 3-disk recovery
set that came with the laptop originally. I don't have a
Windows XP disk... just the lousy recover cd's.. which is
fine for this since I'm starting from scratch with a new
harddrive.

Everything was going fine... I started the rather long
process of using the Windows Update service to get all my
updates and service packs. Not really sure where the
process was when the problem happened. I'm sure it was
before SP2... maybe during some critical updates that
were being installed to get it ready for SP2. Anyway, I
left the PC unattended... I KNOW.. stupid mistake. I
came back about an hour later to find it off. I went to
turn it on and got one long BIOS beep... and then
NOTHING. No HP logo (BIOS).. no startup options..
NOTHING. I tried hard resets using the button on the
back of the laptop. Disconnected all power and battery
for a time to try to flush it out a little.. but
nothing. My LED's all come on and the CD drive will
spin for sec or two.. but nothing on the screen. Can't
even get it to load from the Recovery Disks. Don't have
a floppy drive so any help with other options besides
flashing the BIOS (a very scary thought anyway) would be
greatly appreciated.

The one long BIOS beep code usually means a problem either with the system memory or with the motherboard itself.

Flashing the BIOS will not help.

Try removing one of the memory sticks, and rebooting.

Thanks Darren. Here's what happened yesterday.. I went
to boot up on a whim and whaala! there was BIOS.. but,
to my utter shame I had only hit the power button on a
whim as I was passing by the laptop... and, I had failed
to slide the harddrive back in. So, needless to say..
BIOS didn't get very far. I had to power back down to
install the harddrive. To my utter disappointment BIOS
was MIA when I powered up the second time... and every
time since then. I know what you're thinking... seems
like the harddrive would be the logical cause of my
problems. I took this into account and removed it and
tried to boot again... yet no BIOS. I like the idea of
removing a chipset... should I flip it over and unclip
one of the extended sets? - it's 512K total. Do I run it
with the chipset out or do I replace it before booting
up? Any help or workups would be greatly appreciated.
I'm savvy with software but hardware is not my strong
point... and BIOS might as well be from Athens.

Thanks again...
