What does a scan with a current antivirus (using updated definitions)
show?

scAnned with norton a.v. upto date, no viruses found.
it was sugested that it could be some thing to do with
system idle process (whatever that is).

It's good that you don't have any viruses running, but perhaps one of
the other applications/services running in the background is crashing.
Also, I'd run some hardware diagnoses at this point (RAM, hard drive)
and check your power supply. Is the computer plugged directly into the
wall socket?

Ah HAH! System beeps definitely indicate a hardware problem. So the bit
above where I suggested doing hardware diagnoses is correct. If
hardware diagnoses are not your cuppa, take the box to a reputable
local shop and have them go over it.

Good luck,
