I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to solve a problem on a friends computer. When using it, the system suddenly slows down for a couple of seconds then it will catch back up with itself again. I have done all the usual checks - everything is up to date, there is no spyware etc. and the event log contains no errors. The CPU usage isn't going up to 100% and the temperature is OK. I've also tried disabling the XP indexing service but all to no avail. The PC has an AMD Athlon 2400+XP with 512 meg of RAM. The hard drive is fine, not significantly fragmented (4%) and it has about 80 gig of free space. Does anybody have any suggestions for something that I may have missed? I'm trying to avoid re-installing her computer because it is one of these that come with a re-load disc (puts all pre-installed stuff back on) rather than a proper Windows XP installation disc.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Thanks.

This helped with the drop down menu hanging. It hiccups

faster than waiting.

You didn't mention whether or not you have a scanning virus detection
program?????????? If so did you try shutting it down?
