Can anyone shed any light on this:

Dell PC, Windows XP Home Edition (2 months old)

PC boots up fine, runs through all the bios checking etc, then gets to log
on page with users listed.
However if I do not click on a user within 20 secs the PC will re-boot
itself again going back through
the original start up sequence, eg screen shows all the Bios settings etc.
Wil keep doing this until
I click on a user.

Can anyone offer me an ideas to fix this. Contact Dell and they were useless
with their assistance.
thanks
phil

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery,
uncheck Automatically restart. When the condition occurs again you
should get a blue screen with error message, write it down and post it here.

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?
Does the machine do this if you start it in Safe Mode? To get to Safe
Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This
will give you the correct menu; navigate with your Up arrow key since
the mouse will not work there. Once in Safe Mode, check your log on
settings, power settings, etc. to reverse any changes you know you
made.

If you didn't make any changes that you know of, try a System Restore to
when the computer was working. Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Restore. Then "Restore my computer to an earlier time".

If you want more help after trying these troubleshooting steps, please
give more details about the virus/malware status of the machine
(include all names/versions of programs and whether your antivirus
subscription is active). The more information you can give about what
you've done or not done, the more focused help you can receive.

That doesn't always work. I had a similar problem where the computer
would reboot at will, in safe mode or normal mode. I did what you
suggest and it still rebooted with no error message. Finally, I had put
it on its side and noticed that the rebooting had stopped. I then
realized that the mouse was loose. Changed the mouse to the USB port and
the rebooting went away.

Yes, well it's a place to start. Most spontaneous rebooting problems
I've seen are hardware or driver related. Not always.

Yeah, I believe the SASSER virus was famous for that, wasn't it?

Sasser usually causes the system to slow to an unusable condition, which
can result in a crash, so yes it could be sasser worm.
