Hello
I have 2 USB sticks, different brands, used only for documents. My desktop
(XP) doesn't boot when the one is connected, but boots with the other one.
My laptop (W2000) boots in both cases. For both computers the bios is set to
take first the Hard Disk, afterwards the CD, then the Floppy and nothing
else.
So what makes the difference and how can I fix it.

Throw away the one that does not work.

Buy another of the brand that does.

Seriously.

The value of the time you are going to waste
trying to fix this is going to be way more than
the value of the malfunctioning USB thingie
if you put any value at all it.

I don't profess to know the reason, but, have to agree with Mr.
Green.....pursuing this is just not worth it. I had a similar problem with
a couple of ATA Flash cards....one would be recognized by my printer and the
other would not, yet, both would work when placed in the card reader of my
cpu. The difference, according to my printer's tech people, is in the
'timing' of the flash card.....not sure if they are referring to the
latency, as with memory, or something else. The newer cards work just fine,
so, I relegated the old one to use in my camera.

I agree completely with you concerning the cost effectivness. But as a
technician I wanted to understand it.
Thanks

Yeah, I understand your wanting to figure
out why it's happening...when I have the time,
I spend lots of time figuring out stupid little
annoyances with my hardware as well.

I just thought you might want to get it over with.

Some things that come to mind:

cheap, out-of-spec (timing wise) chipsets
in the device

stick is trying to initialize itself too quickly
on power-up, drags down whole system

stick, upon initial application of power,
gets "spiked" by computer PSU, exceeds
USB current capability, causes system barf

that's all for now...
