has anyone had experience of this pc firm, thinking of calling them out to try and sort a hardrive problem, not sure if they are okay? any views?

PC Callout Limited is registered under the Data Protection Act 1998 and licensed under the Consumer Credit Act 1974
Wow ... do I need a second mortgage.

Nice idea, but I've never heard of them ... I would imagine they have "licensed engineers" throughout the UK who are in your local area. Have you had a free quote off them?

no exactly a quote only there online charge of £35 plus vat for the first hour (can limit time to one hour aswell) and guarantee to fix or not charge, just worried in case they say hardrive in knackered (even though it might not be) and suggest a replacement courtesy of themselves. Suppose its all down to trust. Seems like a good idea to get fixed in situ so you can actually see what they are doing rather than take it into a shop and not know exactly whats being replaced or undertaken

Hi, Lukey....

Can you say what you think is wrong with your HD? Might be a simple problem. In any event, if it needs replacing it's a quite straightforward job and a new Hard Disc will cost you about the same - or just a bit more - as they're charging you for theiradvice.

Would need to know a bit more about your system before going any further.

Regards,

Sheltie

hi sheltie

thanks for the offer but ive posted my problems a couple of times on this board and although had loads of helpful replies havnt yet been able to sort it.

basically my son messed around with the properties menu and I beleive changed the screen resolution settings which I think my pc couldnt handle memorywise. When windows loads, evertime i click or try to do anything the pc freezes and goes blank, have tried safe mode but no difference, I need the hardrive fixing as its got all of my holiday pics on so dont want to reformat, reinstall windows or replace, have tried connecting it as slave to other pc but still cant access files. never mind, apparently its on £35 for an hours work which is a great deal of money,

running windoes 98 by the way

Well a new 80gb hard drive will only set you back £40 delivered, so unless there really important stuff on your current drive, i would just buy a new one.

If you do want a new hard drive try www.savastore.com (next day delivery nearly every time i've ordered from them!) or www.aria.co.uk (expect to wait at least 2 days delivery). Both of them are cheap and reliable websites.

lukey,

where abouts in the country are you?

try this...

START -> SHUT DOWN -> RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE -> type scanreg /restore

pick a date when all was well and enter on restore, reboot and see if any better.

PC Callout

Steer well clear of this company.

This outfit is just a complete shower - beware!

steer clear if you ask me !

dont you have a local computer shop near you or pcworld or something ... it seems stupid to pay these people without your trust ... and they may not even turn up!

well im sure they are better than these online people!! :p

but i agree i wouldnt take my computer to pcworld ... if i have any MAJOR problems there is a little shop down the road who are very good!

so my advise to the poster would be to try and find a computer shop ;)

yes the small independant shops will usually give much better service

PC Callpoop provides a valuable service. If you are totally stumped with a computer issue they send out a technician and he fixes it or you don't pay.

Telling someone to buy a harddrive instead of calling a technician is about the worst advice I've heard since the last time I went to PC world:

They told me I needed a whole motherboard when I knew I only needed a power supply.

I had to practically argue with the guy to get him to sell me the power supply (it was my own custome built PC I knew what it needed).

He finally sold it to me, I installed, 6 years later it's still working for the friend I built it for... (although its a bit smashed from him getting frustrated with online gaming :D)

If you go buy a hard drive they dont tell you that there are cables (sata or IDE) that you need to buy with it.

They also dont tell you that if you do not have an original "OEM" Microsoft Operating System then its another 100+ out of pocket.

Another valuable point from a previous poster is that they go straight out to your house so YOU SEE what they do.

Ive contracted for shops (down the road guys) before that take in a computer, tell the customer 5 days and let it sit on the floor for 4 do 10 minutes work and charge them 75.00.

You get what you pay for whats your time worth to you.

Umm no.
