I was re-imaging an older Compaq P3 computer with XP for
a friend and deleted the old partition and started from
scratch. Now when I boot it up it hangs at the Compaq
screen for about 2 or 3 minutes and then switches to a
black screen with the error "drive read failure" and at
the bottom it says "F1: boot". If I hit F1 it boots fine
and functions as normal but I'd like to configure it so
the Compaq screen and that error screen do not even come
up. Is there some sort of registry hack or something in
the F10 setup I can change to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Darin

Darin,

Based on the time delay at the Compaq screen, this must be a BIOS issue
rather than XP. You should go back and study the bootup error a bit more
closely to see which device the BIOS is hanging on. Is it drive 1 or 2 on
your primary or drive 1 or 2 on your secondary IDE channel? Possibly
another device? Once you identify the device not being recognized by the
BIOS, you then know what to fix.

Good Luck

Also, have you been messing with the drive cables inside? The fix could be
a simple as swapping cables back like they are supposed to be.

Thanks, I'll investigate further this evening.
