my pc base unit keeps shutting down without no command to do so
it just cuts out.
Does it attempt to restart?
If it attempts to restart, this is probably due to a crash. Turn OFF
"automatically restart" in the System Failure section, right click on My
Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and shut down - settings. If
this is related to the problem, you'll probably see a blue screen instead of
the restart. It may seem odd, but that can be a good thing in this
circumstance (the fix is cheaper).
If it doesn't attempt to restart, is it hard to restart immediately?
If it just shuts off, doesn't restart, and is hard to get started again,
this indicates hardware failure, sometimes due to heat. The hardware
failing can include the power supply, the CPU, the motherboard, and the
memory. It can be several components. Unfortunately, the only way to
test is to replace these components, and this is going to cost you money.
So, consider your options as including replacing the system.
Fortunately, the failure isn't likely to include the drive, so you can
normally get your data back with relative ease. Just get a USB2 case,
remove the drive and put it in the case and attach that to the new system.
At most, you will have to "take ownership" of your files, and you can just
copy them to the new system.
