I recently noticed that the path names have the capital letter W with a cross
mark through it. What is this? I don't think that it was there before, and
I wonder if I coninsides with some difficulty I have had with the XP
Professional OS and Explorer browser since I installed a big HP printer
software package.

I am thouroughly disgusted with either Microsoft or HP, but I am not sure
which.

Please help me with this, my first question toward solving the great mystery.

When you get a capital letter with a cross through it, it normally
means that that drive letter is not there/connected or can't be opened.
If the letter is for the HP printer then make sure that it is properly
attached and see if the letter changes. If it's a harddisk letter then
try opening it and see what it says :)

The "W with a cross mark through it" is the symbol for the Korean
currency, the Won. On Korean keyboards, it is located (and has the same
Unicode value as the " \ " symbol used in standard path statements. If
the Won symbol is appearing in your path statements, it's because you
have a conflict between the specific design of your keyboard, your input
language settings, and your language display options.

Why? Did someone from Microsoft or HP come to your home and alter your
Control Panel settings? The only other explanation I can think of is
that you might have installed the wrong language version of the drivers
for the printer, and that's a long shot.

On what operating system, and since when?

If the letter is for the HP printer then make sure that it is properly
attached and see if the letter changes.

What operating system assigns a drive letter to a printer? This is
something I've never heard of.
