Path and file name

"View", "Header and Footer", click the "Switch Between Header and Footer"
icon, click the "Insert autotext" dropdown arrow, select "Filename and
path".

There is one interesting way :)
First, save your document.
Then click View - Header and Footer. When the toolbar is diplayed, click
Insert AutoText, and then Filename and Path.
Then... select the Field, and Cut it. Then close the header-footer, and
Paste the field in your Document.

Type the following and select it.
filename \p

With this selected, press Ctrl-F9 and then F9. This inserts the necessary
field. Otherwise you could use the header/footer toolbar or Insert => Field.

Fortunately, Word provides a simpler way to do this, but it doesn't
advertise itself. There is a built-in AutoText entry, Filename and
Path, to which you can assign a keystroke or a menu button. If you want
to put it on a menu, open the Customize dialog box (Tools, Customize),
choose AutoText in the left pane, scroll down to Filename and Path in
the right pane, and drag that command to the menu or toolbar location
you want.

Hi Larry

I have a clean install of Word XP. The "Filename" autotext entry is defined but not the
"Path" one.

Also, you can dispense with the AutoText toolbar and just type: "filename+F3".

Are you saying there is no "Filename and Path" autotext entry in Word
2002? That's sort of indispensable. I wonder why MS would remove it.

Also, that's handy about inserting the file name of a document via
typing "filename" just like any other AutoText entry. I had never
thought of that. But this doesn't seem available for Filename and Path.
To insert the filename and path, I think the most economical way of
doing it is is what I said, to use a keystroke or menu button assigned
to the AutoText entry. I'm not aware that it's possible to create your
own customized name for an AutoText entry (meaning the keys that you
type that make the AutoText pop-up appear) other than through selecting
the text you want to turn into the entry and pressing Alt+F3. In other
words, it doesn't seem possible to create a custom name for an entry
through the AutoText tab of AutoCorrect.

I'm using Word 2003, but the machine I'm using came with Word 2002 (Office
XP SBE) installed, and I most certainly have the "Filename and path"
AutoText entry. I did *not* import anything from my old machine--customized
Normal.dot from scratch--so all I can say is that my experience differs from
yours.

If you do not have the AutoText entry for this, you can create such a field
(as described below). Apply the Header style to it and save it as an
AutoText entry. Use the name Filename and path. It should then be in your
AutoText menu.
