Patch Tuesday nuked my network connection

I downloaded the critical updates MS provided today (32 bit Vista Ultimate)
and after the requisite reboot, my network connection icon wont get past the
red X saying no cable is plugged in (it is). My router confirms the port is
still active and I've never had any trouble prior to todays updates. Onboard
Gigabit Nvidia NIC on Asus A8N-E Nforce 4 Ultra chipset motherboard. I tried
a system restore back to October 7th but no change. Tried uninstalling the
NIC, no change. Todays updates no longer show as uninstallable items in
Control Panel.

Anyone else having similar trouble with Patch Tuesday updates?

No.

Are you speaking for yourself or for everyone?

I Just Test Installed All 35 Security Related Updates On An X64 Clean
Install Of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition RTM, And The Results Were Sloppy
At Best (The Reboot Process Was Horrible), Just FYI.

P.S. In My Opinion, The Consumer Product Safety Commission Should Force
Microsoft To Issue A Mandatory Recall Of Windows Vista RTM As A Defective
Product, Just FYI.

Did the product hurt your little bitty fingers?

Do a rollback, (Restore) If it works, then it was the updates. If not, then
reinstall the updates.

No problems here - but then I never have the problems I read about you guys
suposedly having.

For a while I thought I had the only working PC with Vista in the whole wide
world. Then I got a laptop as well - and it has no problems either. Just
good luck you'd say.

Then I thought maybe its because of my given name - maybe Vista only works
well if your name is Bill.

Perhaps you could change your name, or you tune anyway.

Thanks Bill

ps - its been the same from version 3.0 for me; all legit, all paid for, by
myself. Both Bill's are happy.

Nice idea but, sorry, doesn't quite work out.

I've had no "won't boot" or similar issues.

But I have had a few with more subtle things.

Like, WHY do folders on my C: drive update when I change things, but folders
on the D: drive don't?

- Bill

Sorry to hear your story - maybe its because you are not a Bill G.

Perhaps you could - - - no forget it.

But whatever, in these forums you get the best free service around. And a
bit of a laugh from time to time.

u gotta be kidding. I've gotten only ONE Vista issue resolved here.
Some issues have not even gotten a response, because no one knows how to
fix those things. I won't rehash the details now...i don't think anyone
is going to step up to the plate now with a fix.

Hi M1cr0s0ft,

You will need to uninstall the following update: KB939653. This can be done
from the Windows Update panel. When you have done this, refer to my post
'Updating Windows Vista' in the newsgroup 'Windows Update' (dated 10/10/2007)
where you will find references to my other posts which should solve your
problem.
Dwarf

Alternatively you can also use System Restore if your had a Restore Point
created before the update was applied.

I would gladly do that if it was an option Dwarf. However, KB939653 is not
listed in my installed updates, probably because I already did a restore back
to Oct 7th in an attempt to fix the problem.

You should have the option of undoing the restore point then try
reinstalling it. If not boot off the Vista DVD go into the Windows Recovery
Environment and do a repair installation.

Finally back online. Undid the restore from last night, uninstalled
KB939653, disabled the onboard nic and installed an Intel Pro 100M PCI nic.
The onboard nic didn't go bad all of a sudden but I'll worry about that later.
