Pasword protect template, not new docs

Is it possible to password protect a .dot file but not
protect the .doc documents created from that .dot when a
user selects "File/New", then selects the template from
the Templates window? I'd like to be able to require a
password to change a .dot, but not require a password to
change a the .doc created by the template...

Thanks,
Todd Lemen

You should get together with the user who keeps posting here that he has
password-protected his templates but the docs created from it are not
password-protected!

I found Simon's postings, and almost wish I had his
problem! I've not been able to replicate his scenario(s)
using Word 2000, XP, or 2003. Unfortunately, I haven't
been able to keep new documents created from Password-
protected templates from bearing the "Provide password or
open read-only" requirement, either. I'd love to keep
templates in a network share, point user to that share
via the Workgroup Templates setting, then require users
to provide a password to open the .dot itself, but not
require a password for .doc's that Word creates from
those protected .dots. This would give the users
unrestricted .docs for their use, but protect the .dots
from inadvertant (or deliberate) alteration.
But, alas, I can't ask users to create .doc documents
based on protected .dots that require them to either:
a) provide the .dot password, or
b) open their .docs as read only.
Providing the users the .dot password defeats the
purpose, and opening every resultant .doc as read only is
simply not an option for them.
Any way to require the password to open the .dot, but
strip out the secuity settings when they create a .doc
based on the template? Any suggestions welcome...

Thanks again,
TL

Hi Todd,

Set the Read only attribute for the template in Windows Explorer. Or if you
are on a network with the templates in a folder on the netword, restrict
write access to the folder.

Thanks, Doug!
Can you see the impression of my palm on my forhead? It
comes from a high velocity delivery of the former to the
latter!

Hope it's not too long lasting.
