I have pasted an Excel Spreadsheet into Word as a bitmap and another spreadsheet as a linked Excel object. First, how would I disconnect that link? Second, I have attempted to fill the background of the bitmap with color using the format object menu and that does not seem to have any effect. Is that just not possible or am I doing something incorrectly? Thank you for your help.

To break the link insert the cursor in the object and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9.
An inserted bitmap is not editable in Word. You cannot format its
background. You would need a bitmap editor to do that.

To deal with the colouring problem for the bitmap, you could select th
bitmap object, then use the transparency tool to mark whatever colou
you want to change. Next, you could place a coloured autoshape behin
the bitmap. This achieves much the same visual effect as re-colourin
the bitmap, but might be easier to do and can be done entirely withi
Word.

I suspect the grey boxes you're referring to are nothing more than th
on-screen field shading. Doesn't affect the printed document. You ca
turn the field shading off via Tools|Options|View and selecting th
'Never' or 'When selected' options from the Field Shading drop-dow
box.
