Paste/Special linking feature in Word 2003

In our office, in Word 2003, the paste/special linking feature and paste as
hyperlink feature do not appear to be working with new documents. The
Tools/Options box is checked for automatic updates upon opening, but it still
doesn’t update the revised links. Documents I created at our old office (xp)
that have links still work, but not new ones. I have tried this on several
machines in our office, but all give the same result.
 
Hello-

Have you looked in the Edit>Links dialog box to make sure the links,
themselves, are set for Automatic?
