Passwords wont save in XP

Hi

Using Win XP Pro, IE 6, OE 6.
I cant get the system to save passwords for websites / my OE mail accounts
etc. Security policies in IE options are custom but I have set the logon
option for automatic. Autocomplete is on. It asks me whether it should save
passwords etc but never does, whatever the answer.
I have tried setting the security lvel to medium but it didnt help.
I know it must be something simple but cant figure it out.
