I would like to password protect an Excel file (or better yet a folder) from opening. Is this possible?

Hi Mike!

In all Versions it is under the Save As dialog but there are
variations:

Excel 97 and, I believe, before
File > Save As

Press Options Button

Select from alternatives available

Impose or Change password

OK

Re-confirm password or passwords

OK

Save

With Excel 2000:
File > Save As > Tools > General Options

Select from alternatives available

Impose or Change password

OK

Re-confirm password or passwords

OK

Save

With Excel 2002(XP) and 2003
Two routes are now available:

Tools > Options > Security

Select from alternatives available

Impose or Change password

Re-confirm password or passwords

OK

OR (As before with Excel 2000)

File > Save As > Tools > General Options

Select from alternatives available

Impose or Change password

Re-confirm password or passwords

OK

Save

Password protection of entire folders is done from within Explorer.
