I am using XP Home with SP2.

I have several 250GB external drives that I use for backup purposes. I would
like to restrict access to the folders and files in them by any person who
tries to open them either on my computer or any other machine.

I have looked at several software packages and each seems to want to make
the folders invisible and they take a very long time to operate. All I want
is for anyone trying to open to enter the correct password.

Checkout the freeware "Truecrypt"

Encryption is the only method that will work

Use a backup program that allows you to assign a password to the backups.
