Glenna's link is to the PPT FAQ. It describes all the options for
password protection. There are some built-in options in some versions.
For versions prior to 2002, you need options that are not built-in. It
also describes the difficulty with using password protection (mainly lack
of compatibility with older versions).

You don't mention which version of PowerPoint you have. Password protection
*is* built into PPT 2002 and up (as the page linked to below mentions).
