i just read an overview about compressed/zip folders and it says i can put a
password on the file to protect it but it does not say how, can anyone help.
thank you

One cannot password-protect a folder in Windows XP.
For a more secure method, see the following:

this is the text i refer to, You can protect zipped compressed folders with
a password. This protects your data if you save it in a compressed folders
shared network folder, attach it to an e-mail message, or move it between
work and home on floppy disks. does this mean i can put private files in a
compressed/zip folder, transfer it to a floppy, and password protect it so
nobody who inserts the disk can access the files, and if so, how?

1. Double-click the compressed/zip folder.
2. Click File.
3. Click Add a Password.

so simple. never even thought to look there (blushes). thank you

You're welcome, RobLee. It's simple, but it's not at all obvious, as
shown by the fact that other people who replied said that it isn't
possible to assign a password.

Carey,
Attention to details, a ZIPPED folder is really not a folder, but a file
the OS treats as a folder. A ZIPPED folder also has special capabilities,
as being able to be password protected, requiring the input of the password
to view the contents of the "file", which the OS treats like a folder.
