Hello

I recently set up a network at my home, consisting of four Windows XP Home
Edition computers.

I'm trying to set up my network so that I can share certain folders, but
they require the user to enter a password. Then, I could use other computers
to access the My Documents folder [and others] on my computer, but no one
else can.

Please provide detailed instructions, as I have very little experience with
networking.

Thankyou so much,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Networking in WinXP Home doesn't work on a system of passwording folders, it
works on a set of permissions or ACL's (Access Control Lists). Folders on a
given system are either shared or not shared with the workgroup. Generally,
"everyone" is given read permissions on a shared folder, though you can
alter this so that other users can change them as well. For explicit
user-based permissions you would need a domain, something not supported in
WinXP Home.

Like Win2K, WinXP's file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or
allow, the cumbersome method of password protection for individual
applications, files, or folders. Instead, it uses the superior method
of explicitly assigning file/folder permissions to individual users
and/or groups.

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.

As a crude work-around, you can place the file in a compressed
folder, and set a password to uncompress the folder to view/access its
contents. Also, some applications allow the user to password-protect
their specific data files. Read the specific application's Help files
for further information on this capability.
