I have a user that has forgotton a password for a file.
Is there any work around to get a copy of the file active?

Is this a document password that prevent the opening of the document without
the password? If it is then you are in big trouble. There is no quick or
easy means of cracking Word's encryption. If you can put aside a computer to
do the processing, which could take a loooooooooooong time if the password
is complex, then there is a utility linked from the favourites page of my
web site that will get there .... eventually.

The password protection only protects portions of the
sheet. Is there a way to decode and find out what the
password is?

That's a different matter entirely :)
Insert the file into a new blank document.
The protection will be removed.
